ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Copilot for students in Malaysia
In short: all three have a free plan, so most students don't need to pay. ChatGPT is the all-round assistant. Gemini works with your Google account and is the only one of the three with a parent-supervised option for children under 13. Copilot is free, and built into Word, Excel and PowerPoint if you subscribe to Microsoft 365 (from RM44/month). ChatGPT and Copilot require you to be at least 13, and ChatGPT needs a parent's or guardian's permission if you're under 18.
This page is for secondary school, pre-university and university students in Malaysia. It sticks to facts we could check on each company's own pages: plans, prices and age rules. Before using any AI for coursework, check your school's or university's rules, and always check AI answers yourself.
How we picked: these are the three general AI assistants SIM lists on its secondary school and university pages. This is not a paid ranking, and this page has no sponsored placements or affiliate links.

Verdict: best for…
- ChatGPT: an all-rounder for older students. Use it to explain topics, outline essays and practise questions. You must be 13 or older, and under-18s need a parent's or guardian's permission. The free plan is enough for most students.
- Google Gemini: students whose school or university runs on Google. It works alongside Gmail and Google Docs, and of the three it is the only one with a parent-supervised option for children under 13. If your institution uses Google Workspace for Education, also see Gemini for Education and NotebookLM.
- Microsoft Copilot: students who already write in Word and present in PowerPoint. The Copilot app is free. Microsoft 365 Personal (RM44/mo) adds the Office desktop apps with Copilot and 1 TB of cloud storage.

Frequently asked questions
Are ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot free for students in Malaysia?
Yes. All three have a free plan. Paid plans give higher limits and extra features, but most schoolwork can be done on the free plans.
What age do you need to be to use ChatGPT?
OpenAI's Terms of Use say you must be at least 13, or the minimum age in your country. If you're under 18, you need a parent's or legal guardian's permission (checked 16 Oct 2026).
Can primary school children use Gemini?
Google lets a parent give a child under 13 access to Gemini Apps through a supervised Google account managed in Family Link. Google says it is releasing this gradually, so it may not be available on every account yet.
How much do Gemini and Copilot cost in ringgit?
On Google's Malaysia page, Google AI Plus is MYR23.99/month and Google AI Pro is MYR97.99/month. On Microsoft's Malaysia page, Microsoft 365 Personal is RM44/month or RM440/year. ChatGPT shows its ringgit price at checkout (checked 16 Oct 2026).
Can I use AI for my assignments?
That depends on your school's or university's rules. Many allow AI for understanding and brainstorming but not for submitting AI-written work. AI answers can be wrong, so check facts against your textbook or lecture notes.
Which one is best for Bahasa Melayu?
SIM hasn't confirmed official BM support for these three on the vendors' pages, so we don't name a winner. Try the same BM question on each free plan and compare the answers.
