Professional responsibility

  • Malaysian Bar guidance. Bar Council Circular No 242/2025 (3 Jul 2025) asks members to verify all generative AI output against authoritative legal databases, not to input client-specific facts or personal data, to comply with the PDPA and to keep human oversight.
  • Verify every output. AI can be wrong, invent sources or miss Malaysian rules. Check it against the primary source before you rely on it.
  • Protect client confidentiality. Don't put client-identifying facts or personal data into general AI tools. Personal data is protected under the PDPA 2010; use tools and settings your firm has approved.
  • It does not replace professional judgement. You remain responsible for your advice, work and sign-off under the Legal Profession Act 1976 and the Legal Profession (Practice and Etiquette) Rules 1978. Follow any guidance from the Malaysian Bar.
